LES MISERABLES and More Play Des Moines in October 2012

Les-Mis-and-More-Featured-in-Des-Moines-20010101

With summer officially over, we can be grateful that theater season has officially begun. Nearly all of the Des Moines area venues and theater companies have something to offer this October. So read on to find out what will be playing, when and where.

The Civic Center of Greater Des Moines’ Broadway Series launches this week with Les Misérables, the classic musical set during the French Revolution. Under the watchful eye of original producer Cameron Mackintosh, the 25th anniversary production has undergone some changes; however, the classic story and memorable music remain and the show is sure to captivate audiences all over again. The show runs October 2 – 7th. For ticket information visit http://www.civiccenter.org/

The StageWest Theater Company finishes the run of Tracy LettsSuperior Donuts on October 7th and their next production, Evil Dead: The Musical, opens on October 26th. Evil Dead is based on Sam Raimi’s cult horror films from the 1980s, but do not be fooled. Featuring numbers such as “All the Men in My Life Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons,” the show is hilariously campy rather than frightening. The Des Moines Playhouse showcases Becky’s New Car on October 19th. The comedy tells the story of Becky Foster, a woman stuck in a rut with no way out. But when a millionaire drops into the car dealership where she works, she may have the opportunity to change the direction of her life. The show runs through November 4th. The Tallgrass Theatre Company kicked off the season afew days ago with Five Women Wearing the Same Dress and the run continues through October 13th. The description of the play, from writer Alan Ball, reads like a Bridesmaids-esque romp with a similar dose of heart peppered throughout. The Bridesmaids similarity can only help draw audiences to the production and should give this small company a boost to start off the 2012-2013 season. There is something for everybody this month, so make a vow to go to a show in October.

Brooke BridenstineBrooke is a Des Moines native who has been enjoying theater her entire life. She fell in love with writing about theater in college when an extra credit assignment in Theater 106 was to go to a show and review it. After seeing Wicked thirteen times last year, Brooke decided it was time to start making something of her passion.
