The Des Moines Community Playhouse play reading series presents Horton Foote's "Dividing the Estate," 7:00 PM, Monday, Oct. 1. The evening is free; beverages will be available for purchase.
In "Dividing the Estate," matriarch StElla Gordon is determined not to divide her 100-year-old Texas estate, despite her family's declining wealth and the looming financial crisis. But her three children have another plan. Old resentments and sibling rivalries surface as the members of this hilariously dysfunctional family go head-to-head to see who might claim the biggest piece of the pie.
The Playhouse cast, under the direction of Anne Frett, features Emily Bailey, Judy Blessington, Mary Bricker, Rusk Dorsett, Annette Duffy, Raven Garrison, Brianne Magel, Devin Preston, Lyn Schneider, Megan Schug, Iris Seaman, Lester Small, and Joe Smith.
The Playhouse's play reading series is held on the first Monday of each month, on the stage in the theatre's upper lobby. Actors read from scripts; there are no costumes or scenery pieces.
John Viars, Playhouse executive director, says, "The goal of this project is to offer audiences and volunteers an opportunity to familiarize themselves with upcoming productions, as well as offer insight into new scripts and possible titles to be mounted in the future. "
The Playhouse is Iowa's oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
